I’ve just realised that I’m doing my dream job.
Not magic. Despite the cliché, I never had a big obsession with magic as a kid. I could never be bothered practicing or reading instructions on how to do stuff. I was always the kid making a car out of the box it came in.
No, my dream job was that of Jack Killian. You know, Jack Killian off “Midnight Caller”?
I’ve now lost anybody under the age of thirty. For those of you who don’t know, Jack Killian was the main character in the TV show ‘Midnight Caller‘. He presented a talk radio show at night and, during the day spent his time around beautiful women, solving crimes and a bunch of other stuff that wasn’t really any of his business.
As a kid, I wanted that job. Not being on the radio, I just wanted that much free time in the day, that I could kick around and do loads of fun stuff that wasn’t boring office work.
And it was only yesterday that I realised that I had it!
To be fair, I’m not solving crime, hanging around with beautiful women or anything. In fact, this is my present view:
I know. How hardcore am I?
That’s not the point though. The point is that the lifestyle was what I was yearning for and I seem to have found it. I spend my nights working for a few hours, doing card tricks and making people laugh, leaving me free during the day to lead my totally non Killian-esque lifestyle.
It was never about the job, just the life. The truth is that there’s plenty of jobs that could give me a similar lifestyle. Sure, it helps to find a job that you love (and I’ve struck lucky there too), but it’s the lifestyle you want to focus on, your job is just a small part of it.
Most of the people I know would hate the working hours of a magician – long drives all over the country, working evenings and never having a weekend off, but I love it. I get to get stuff done during the day, I can drop and pick the kids up (god, I’m like the antisis of Jack Killian, aren’t I?)
